The Greenback

Dollar Advances to One-Month High as U.S. Companies Add Jobs

July 30 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar rose to a one-month high versus the euro and the yen after a private report showed U.S. companies unexpectedly added jobs this month.

The greenback also gained as a decline in crude oil eased concern elevated fuel costs will erode consumer spending. New Zealand's dollar dropped against all of the other major currencies except the Australian dollar after Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard said slowing economic growth will curb inflation in the next two years.

Greenback Relinquishes Gains on Oil
by Korman Tam
7/30/2008 3:20:00 PM
The dollar backed away from its gains versus the majors by afternoon New York trading, relinquishing a five-week high against the euro at 1.5523 to fall back near the 1.56-handle. The greenback initially received a boost from the better-than-expected ADP private sector payrolls report but later succumbed to a combination of profit taking ahead of key US economic reports starting tomorrow and a $4.58 rebound in oil to $126.71 per barrel.

The ADP private sector payrolls defied consensus estimates for a loss of 60k jobs in July, following a 79k loss a month earlier, instead increasing by 9k jobs. Traders quickly rewarded the dollar following another bout of upbeat economic data, reacting in similar fashion to yesterday's better-than-forecast consumer confidence survey. However, the euphoria was short-lived as oil extended its rally and markets shift focus to several potentially dollar negative reports in the remainder of the week.

The US reports scheduled for release tomorrow include the advanced reading for Q2 GDP, weekly jobless claims, July NY NAPM manufacturing and the July Chicago PMI. The advanced reading for GDP in Q2 is seen improving to 2.0% from 1.0% in the previous quarter. The Chicago PMI reading is seen remaining beneath the key 50-level for the 6th consecutive month, expected to decline to 49.0 from 49.6 and highlighting continued weakness in the US manufacturing sector. Although the report has been steadily improving since hitting a 7-year low in February at 44.5, it has remain mired in contraction territory for six months and is seen slipping lower from the previous month.

Bloomberg : Bank of England : Standard & Poor

Pound Falls, Yen Rises on Speculation Credit Losses Spreading

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- The pound fell and the yen advanced on speculation spreading credit market losses at banks will result in slower economic growth and discourage policy makers from raising interest rates.

Sterling dropped the most in more than three weeks versus the dollar after Bradford & Bingley Plc, the U.K.'s biggest mortgage lender to landlords, said it will sell shares at a 33 percent discount. The yen rose against all of the major currencies as a decline in European and U.S. stocks eroded demand for higher-yielding assets funded in Japan.

``Risk aversion is filtering into the market again,'' said Matthew Strauss, a senior currency strategist in Toronto at RBC Capital Markets Inc., a unit of Canada's biggest bank by assets. ``Even though the worst of the financial crisis may be behind us, the recovery won't be a smooth ride. It's clearly weighing on the pound.''

The pound dropped 0.9 percent to $1.9637 at 10:46 a.m. in New York, from $1.9823 on May 30. It fell 0.7 percent to 79.05 pence per euro, from 78.47 pence. The yen strengthened 1.8 percent to 205.45 per pound, from 209.16. Japan's currency rose 1.1 percent to 162.40 per euro, from 164.15, and gained 0.9 percent to 104.62 per dollar, from 105.52

The U.S. currency rose against the euro as crude oil fell 1.3 percent to $125.72 a barrel, easing concern high commodity prices will reduce U.S. consumer spending. Crude reached a record high of $135.09 on May 22.

U.S. Factories

The dollar remained higher versus the 15-nation currency after the Institute for Supply Management's factory index increased to 49.6 in May, from 48.6 in the previous month. The median forecast of 75 economists surveyed by Bloomberg was for a decrease to 48.5. A reading below 50 indicates contraction.

``If you're looking for signs of a deep outright recession, you're not able to find it in this report,'' said Benedikt Germanier, a currency strategist at UBS AG in Stamford, Connecticut. ``I would advise people to buy the dollar on dips and sell the euro on a rally of $1.56-$1.57.''

The dollar strengthened 0.2 percent to $1.5524 per euro, compared with $1.5554 on May 30.

The pound weakened after Bradford & Bingley Chief Executive Officer Stephen Crawshaw quit yesterday, citing health reasons. TPG Inc., a leveraged buyout firm, is in talks to buy a 20 percent stake in the mortgage lender. The bank plans to raise an additional 250 million pounds ($490 million) from shareholders.

``The magnitude of this took the market by surprise,'' said Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. in New York. ``The pound remains vulnerable.''

Bank of England

The Bank of England will keep its benchmark interest rate at 5 percent on June 5, according to the median forecast of 60 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Policy makers have lowered the rate three times by a total of 0.75 percentage point since December.

The yen increased 2.4 percent to 13.5289 against the South African rand and 1.4 percent to 20.3804 versus Norway's krone on speculation a plunge of as much as 32 percent in Bradford & Bingley's shares will discourage the carry trade. In such a trade, investors get funds in a country with low borrowing costs and purchase assets where returns are higher. Japan's target lending rate of 0.5 percent compares with 11.50 percent in South Africa and 5.5 percent in Norway.

European stocks fell for the first time in four days, pushing the Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index down 1.1 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 1 percent.

`Greater Concern'

``We're seeing overall a fairly consistent response to a drop in risk appetite, and the catalyst is greater concern about the outlook for the financial sector,'' said Steve Pearson, chief currency strategist at HBOS Treasury Services Plc in London. ``People are worried about banks' ability to raise the capital they need. The yen is going to outperform at the expense of higher yielders.'' The yen may rise to 203 against the pound and 103 per dollar this week, Pearson forecast.

The U.S. currency may be supported as pension funds, mutual funds and insurance companies bought more dollars than they've sold this year, according to State Street Corp. and Bank of New York Mellon Corp., the largest money managers for institutions. The dollar gained in 71 percent of the quarters over the past decade when they were net buyers, according to Boston-based State Street.

Futures on the Chicago Board of Trade showed a 98 percent chance the Federal Reserve will keep its target rate at 2 percent when it next meets on June 25. That compares with 90 percent odds a week earlier. The balance of bets was for a cut of a quarter-percentage point. The central bank has reduced rates seven times since September.

FOREX NEWS

Dollar Advances as Durable Goods Measure Unexpectedly Rises

May 28 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar reached a two-week high against the yen as a measure of U.S. durable goods orders unexpectedly increased, signaling the outlook for the world's biggest economy may improve.

Japan's currency touched a one-month low against the euro and the weakest since November versus the Australian dollar, reaching the day's lowest levels as an earlier decline in crude oil spurred investors to buy higher-yielding assets funded in Japan's currency, in a strategy known as the carry trade. The yen pared its drop as oil trimmed its decline.

``There's room for the dollar to gain,'' said Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo Bank in New York. ``Lower oil prices definitely removed one of the risk factors for the U.S. economy.''

The U.S. currency climbed to 104.73 yen at 10:14 a.m. in New York, from 104.24, and reached the strongest since May 14. The U.S. currency strengthened to $1.5661 per euro from $1.5691, paring its decline this year to 6.8 percent. The yen fell to 164 per euro from 163.58 yesterday, and touched the weakest since April 24.

Orders for U.S. durable goods orders excluding transportation equipment rose 2.5 percent in April, while the median forecast in a Bloomberg survey was for a 0.5 percent drop. Overall orders fell 0.5 percent, after a 0.3 percent drop in March, the Commerce Department said.

Futures on the Chicago Board of Trade showed a 30 percent chance the Fed will raise its target rate by a quarter- percentage point to 2.25 percent on Sept. 16, up from 21 percent a week ago.

Yen and Aussie

Crude oil for July delivery was little changed at about $128 a barrel, after earlier dropping as much as 2.2 percent to $125.96 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That was the lowest since May 19.

The Japanese currency touched 100.80 per Australian dollar, the weakest since Nov. 14, from 99.91 yesterday.

In the carry trade, investors get funds in a country with low borrowing costs and invest where rates are higher, earning the difference. The risk is that currency moves erode the profit from the rate differential. Japan's benchmark rate is 0.5 percent, the lowest among major economies. Australia's is 7.25 percent.

The euro pared its drop after a report showed inflation in Germany, Europe's largest economy, accelerated more than forecast in May.

ECB Benchmark

German consumer prices rose 3 percent this month from a year ago after rising 2.6 percent last month, when measured using a harmonized European Union method, the Federal Statistics Office said. The median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey was for inflation to quicken to 2.9 percent. A separate report showed French consumer confidence dropped to a record low in May.

The European Central Bank has kept its main interest rate at 4 percent since June 2007.

Royal Bank of Scotland Plc recommended investors buy the euro against the dollar, after the company last week pushed back its forecast for the timing of an ECB rate cut to the second quarter of next year.

``Oil-related stagflation worries will play moderately positively for the euro,'' strategists led by David Simmonds, global head of currency research at the U.K.'s second-biggest lender, wrote in a research note yesterday.

Europe's single currency may rise to $1.60 by the end of June, the bank forecast.

Treasury Sales

The dollar also rose against the yen as the Treasury prepared to sell $30 billion of two-year notes today and $19 billion of five-year debt tomorrow. The U.S. currency appreciated 0.3 percent against the yen when the government sold $30 billion of two-year securities on April 23.

``There could be quite a lot of dollar-buying interest as the day progresses,'' said Tsutomu Soma, a bond and currency dealer at Okasan Securities Co. in Tokyo. ``There should be reasonable demand for U.S. government debt.''

Japan, the largest foreign owner of Treasury securities, increased its holdings by $14.1 billion to $600.7 billion in March, according to the Treasury Department.

The US Dollar

USD Edges Higher
by Korman Tam
5/14/2008 3:10:00 PM

The greenback was higher against the yen and the sterling, but relinquished some of its gains versus the euro. The economic calendar was light on Wednesday, with just the release of consumer prices. The April CPI figures were better than expected, with the headline readings lower at 0.2% versus 0.3% a month earlier and 3.9% down from 4.0% in the previous year. The excluding food and energy readings also improved, at 0.1% versus 0.2% in March and down to 2.3% compared with 2.4% a year earlier.

Traders will have a lot to digest from the US, with the economic data scheduled for Thursday consisting of weekly jobless claims, NY Fed manufacturing survey, March TICS, April capacity utilization, April industrial output, May Philadelphia Fed survey, and the May NAHB housing market index.

Boston Fed President Rosengren offered a somber assessment of the US economy, saying it has slowed noticeably ¨C with job losses, food and energy prices, asset price falls raising risks to financial institutions. Further, he added that housing price declines have been national and not just regional. Meanwhile, former Fed Chairman Volker said the US was suffering from an economic problem and not just a financial problem. Volker added that the intervention by central banks in mortgage markets was a departure from traditional practices, implying support for a particularly sector of the market.

Meanwhile, wholesale inventories posted a 0.1% decline in March compared with a 1.1% increase in February.

Friday's data will see the March trade deficit shrinking to $61.3 billion down from $62.32 billion in February.

MARKET OUTLOOK THIS WEEK

The week ahead offers a barrage of economic news for currency traders to digest, with the key highlights coming from the US. Markets will focus closely on the FOMC monetary policy decision on Wednesday afternoon. We expect the Fed to ease policy by 25-basis points to 2.0%, and maintain a downbeat outlook on the economy similar to its previous statement. Nonetheless, we anticipate the Fed to leave policy unchanged for the remainder of the year after this week*s rate cut given the aggressive easing that has already materialized.

In addition to the highly anticipated US jobs report on Friday, the calendar also consists of April consumer confidence, US Q1 advanced GDP, PCE, Chicago PMI, March consumption, personal income, durable goods orders, and factory orders. The April unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 5.2%, while non-farm payrolls are not expected to improve, posting another 80k loss of jobs. The Q1 advanced reading for GDP is seen slowing to 0.2% from 0.6% previously, the PCE index is expected to ease to 3.7% from 3.9% in the previous quarter.

The greenback rallied to its highest levels in two-weeks against the yen at 104.79 and euro at 1.5590. While it remains to be seen whether the recent dollar rebound will be sustainable, Eurozone officials have become more outspoken about their unease over the euro
*s strength. ECB President Trichet said ※there have been at times sharp fluctuations between major currencies§ and expressed concern about the ※possible implications on economic and financial stability.
